Local access information

The information on this page is for city residents and business owners and workers affected by road closures and access during the festival.

Festival operating hours

In 2024, the event operating hours will be:

  • Friday 16 February, 5 pm to 11 pm (with possible sound checks from 2 pm)
  • Saturday 17 February, 10 am to 11 pm (with possible sound checks from 9 am)
  • Sunday 18 February, 10 am to 5 pm (with possible sound checks from 9 am)

Ainslie Place and Riverside Lane

Ainslie Place will be closed from 4 am Thursday 15 February until 4 am Monday 19 February. This will affect access to Riverside Lane.

During this time, entry and exit into Ainslie Place will be from London Circuit via the Northbourne Avenue end only.

Local businesses and residents need to show a vehicle access permit at the London Circuit traffic control point.

City Plaza Apartments residents will be provided vehicle access permits through their building Executive Committee. If you are a resident, please contact the committee if you have questions.

Businesses that need to access Riverside Lane can collect a car pass from the National Multicultural Festival site office between Monday 12 February and Thursday 15 February, from 9 am to 5 pm.

The site office will be located on Level 2 at the Theo Notaras Centre, 180 London Circuit.

Proof of business address will be required to collect a vehicle access permit (for example rates notice or bill).

Local business and residents can access Riverside Lane from:

  • 4 am to 8 pm Thursday 15 February
  • 8 pm Thursday 15 February to 6 pm Friday 16 February
  • 11:30 pm Friday 16 February to 11 am Saturday 17 February
  • 11:30 pm Saturday 17 February to 11 am Sunday 18 February
  • 3 pm Sunday 16 February to 4 am Monday 19 February

To access Ainslie Place and Riverside Lane in these times, you need to show your vehicle access permit at the London Circuit traffic control point.

For public safety, there is no access in or out of Ainslie Place or Riverside Lane from:

  • 6 pm to 11:30 pm Friday 16 February
  • 11 am to 11:30 pm Saturday 17 February
  • 11 am to 3 pm Sunday 18 February

Akuna Street

Several parts of Akuna Street will be affected. Please see the map below and scroll down for more detailed information.

Between Cooyong Street and Bunda Street

Akuna Street between Cooyong Street and Bunda Street westbound will be closed from 8 pm Thursday 15 February to 4 am Monday 19 February.

This road eastbound will be open so vehicles can exit the Canberra Centre carpark to Cooyong Street.

Between Bunda Street and City Walk

Road changes will be in place on Akuna Street between Bunda Street and City Walk from 8 pm Thursday 15 February until 4 am Monday 19 February.

One parking lane and one traffic lane will become a 2-way road. Please follow traffic directions.

Entry and exit into Akuna Street will be via Binara Street.

Access to Industry House and Manhattan Apartments will be open during the event except during the festival parade. The road will be closed from 3 pm to 6 pm on Saturday 17 February.

The MYER loading dock can be accessed from 4 am to 9 am on Saturday 17 February and Sunday 18 February.

Between Rabaul Lane and London Circuit

Akuna Street between Rabaul Lane and London Circuit will be open during the event except during the festival parade. The road will be closed from 3 pm to 6 pm on Saturday 17 February.

Entry into this section of Akuna Street will be via Nangari Street then Rabaul Lane only. Exit from Akuna Street via London Circuit towards Constitution Avenue only.

Access to businesses and residences will be open except during the festival parade. This includes Nesuto Canberra, Highgate Apartments, and Hillside Lane including The Village Hostel, The Sebel Hotel, and Quest.

Bailey’s Corner Car Park off Theatre Lane (opposite Mooseheads)

Some parking will be closed from Wednesday 7 February to Friday 23 February.

The car park will be fully closed from Thursday 15 February to Monday 19 February.

Permit pass holders (issued by the festival team or not) can access the car park except from 2 pm to 6 pm Saturday 17 February, during the festival parade.

Bunda Street between Genge Street and Akuna Street

Bunda Street between Genge Street and Akuna Street will be closed from 8 pm Tuesday 13 February to 8 pm Tuesday 20 February.

Only local commercial businesses will have access, including delivery drivers, courier drivers, and waste trucks. If you are picking up or delivering something on behalf of a business in the area, speak to the traffic controllers to get access.

Access will be available from

  • 8 pm Tuesday 13 February to 11am Friday 16 February
  • 11:30 pm Friday 16 February to 9 am Saturday 17 February
  • 11:30 pm Saturday 17 February to 9 am Sunday 18 February
  • 9 pm Sunday 18 February onwards.

For public safety, there will be no access from

  • 11 am to 11:30 pm Friday 16 February
  • 9 am to 11:30 pm Saturday 17 February
  • 9 am to 9 pm Sunday 18 February.

Entry to Bunda Street will be from Genge Street, Mort Street, or Northbourne Avenue.

London Circuit between Northbourne Avenue and Constitution Avenue

Road will be closed from 8pm Thursday 15 February until 4am Monday 19 February.

Theatre Lane

Road will be closed from 3 pm to 6 pm Saturday 17 February, during the festival parade only.

This does not impact access to the accessible parking at Constitution Place.

Tocumwal Lane

Access to Tocumwal Lane will be impacted by Bunda Street closures (see above). Access times and dates listed for Bunda Street will apply to Tocumwal Lane.

Please note festival infrastructure will impact car parking in Tocumwal Lane from Wednesday 14 February.
