Shiamak Davar

Shiamak Davar is an acclaimed artist and a renowned Bollywood Choreographer. His slick choreography and exemplary vision created high standards of performance in Bollywood has redefined choreography in Bollywood forever. He is been the choreographer of the prestigious IIFA Awards for 10 years. Having worked with acclaimed actors including Mr Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherji and Aishwarya Rai, Shiamak strikes a wonderful chord in keeping the persona of the stars and making them believable as characters.

Shiamak was recently honoured with a doctorate degree from the Middlesex University London for his contribution to performing arts, entertainment and dance education in India and globally.

The Shiamak Team (Melbourne)

The Shiamak Movement in Australia began with the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, in March 2006. The enthusiasm and warmth of the dancers from Melbourne encouraged Shiamak to set up his Australian base in Melbourne. The Shiamak Dance Team (Melbourne) was soon formed to share the 'Shiamak energy' across the Australian continent.

The Shiamak Dance Team (Melbourne) is a committed to promoting Shiamak's philosophy of 'Have Feet. Will Dance.' and 'Have Spirit. Will Triumph.' with their excellent performances. The Shiamak Dance Team (Melbourne) has performed at prestigious events like the the Premier's Olympic Games Dinner Appeal - Adelaide (August 2009), United Nations World Conference (August 2010), the Indian Film Festival - Bollywood and Beyond (2010, 2011). Stars of Bollywood (Melbourne March 2011, Sydney August 2011). Recently, The Shiamak Dance Team (Melbourne) topped off its astonishing journey in Melbourne by smashing the Guinness World Record for the Largest Bollywood Dance Class in the world.

Lotus Dance School lead by choreographer Purvi Desai

Lotus Dance School lead by choreographer Purvi Desai will be showcasing both traditional Folk dances of Gujarat and Rajasthan along side classical based bollywood dance. There will also be a fun filled workshop for people to learn Bollywood dance as well as the stick dance from Gujarat. Lotus Dance School has performed at various festivals such as Diwali at NSW Parliament house, Sydney Children's Festival, Diwali Mela, Holi Mahautsav, India Fair and other various council fairs. Purvi Desai also recently choreographed for the first ever Gujarati Movie - "Pardes" fimed and produced in Australia. Outlined below are the details of our program.

Traditional GarbaIndia Dance

Garba is a tradional dance from Gujarat performed to celebrate the victory of goddess Durga during Navratri. Garba is a very high-energy dance performed with to mixture of slow and fast rhythms while maintain a circular formation. Performers wear colourful costumes depicting the traditional mirror work and embroidery from Gujarat. 

Rajasthani Dance

India DanceThe traditional dances of Rajasthan are absolutely colourful and lively and have their own significance and importance. In Rajasthan, folk dances are the highlights of any celebration and festivity. Rajsthani dance movements are both graceful and extremely energetic. Gypsy dances of Spain can trace their origin to Rajasthan.

 

 
Semi- Classical DanceIndia Dance

Encompassing movements from oddissi, bharat natyam and kathak this contempory Indian dance showcases all the classical Indian dance forms in a modern format. 

Bollywood Dance

From classical to folk dance to contempory - every dance form gets a Bollywood twist in this foot tapping number Workshop with Dandiya Sticks and Bollywood dance.

Our dancers will teach and lead a workshop with audience members for both the stick dance and bollywood dance.

Traditional Dandiya

High energy dance from gujarat performed with sticks and partners. Dandiya Raas is the traditional folk dance form of Gujarat, where it is performed depicting scenes of Krishna Leela. Along with Garba it is the featured dance of Navratri evenings in Western India.

An Evening of Indian Classical Folk dances by top-class overseas India dancers (Kalamandalam)

India in the City

The Premier Classical Dance Troupe of India has been travelling abroad since 1983 and has performed in Thailand, Japan, U. K., Beirut, Germany, France, USA, Nepal, Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait and in Australia. Nine beautiful, young and energetic artists of the famous Kalamandalam troupe will present group choreographies of Indian Folk Dances with colours, rhythms and songs. There will be two sets of performances (25 minutes each) at the India in City stage on 11 February.
 
As a part of the Multicultural Festival the group will also present a classical ballet on 4th February at the Canberra Grammar Girls School. For more information see poster.
